Centripetal pump

What is a centripetal pump?

A centripetal pump pushes fluids towards a central drain. The pump is made of two discs with matching grooves between them. Through the rotation of the separator bowl and the resulting pressure the fluid is pushed into the scoop of the groove. In this way the fluid is forced along the spiral groove towards the central drain. Centripetal pumps are commonly used in purifiers or clarifiers in marine applications. Centripetal pumps discharge the clarified oil under pressure.

What is the difference with a centrifugal pump?

Centrifugal pumps and centripetal pumps are much alike, although there are two considerable differences. Firstly there is the way in which they create pressure. A centripetal pump is fixed to the hood of a separator and through the rotating movement of the separator bowl the liquid is forced to the central drain. In a centrifugal pump the discs rotate in a stationary bowl creating a force away from the center of the circle of motion.

Another substantial difference is that the liquid in a centrifugal pomp flows out from within the pump through the discs’ grooves. In a centripetal pump, on the other hand, liquid is flowing towards the center and is separated through a drain.

The advantages of a centripetal pump

The use of a centripetal pump in a marine application brings along the following advantages:

  • First of all the centripetal pump serves as a pump in providing the pressure needed for downstream processes.
  • Secondly liquids are guided out of the separator bowl without air or foam. Using counter pressure a good liquid seal is obtained and the liquid does not come into contact with the air and thus remains free of foam.
  • Lastly fine regulation of the separation zone is possible using the counterpressure when separating liquid mixtures.
