Marine fuel separator
How does a marine fuel separator work?
A marine fuel water separator separates your fuel from water. The way it works is pretty straightforward. The top of the filtration system consists of a paper element and the bottom of the filter is a holding tank or bowl. Water is heavier in comparison to fuel, so water sinks to the bottom of the filter until it’s emptied. It is as simple as that.
Although it is based on a very simple principle no marine engine will function properly without it. The strength of the fuel water separator lies in its simplicity. At KET Marine we understand that time is of the essence when it comes to replacing malfunctioning separators or supplying you with other spare parts.

Why do fuel and water need to be separated?
What happens to an engine when contaminated fuel runs through it?
We take a step back and look at the purpose of marine fuel water separators and see why they have such a prominent place within marine engines.
A ship’s engine simply does not run on water, so it is important that this is removed in time. The effects of fuel contamination range from minor smoke and loss of performance, to more severe tank corrosion, and engine shutdown and damage.
How does water get into fuel?
Can this be prevented?
There are multiple ways of water getting into your fuel. The most obvious way is when pipes are not properly sealed and water can get in. This one is fairly easy to prevent, you have to make sure that all openings have been closed. Another example is when condensation builds up in the fuel tank. The condensation is caused, for example, by the heat in the engine room. This is a lot harder to prevent, so it is wise to check your fuel water separators from time to time.
KET Marine will have your separators quay side in no-time!
In addition to our spare parts program, we also offer you complete service & engineering solutions to properly support you with any technical requirements regarding your GEA Westfalia and Alfa Laval separators. We’ll have our spare parts and/or engineers quay side in no-time.
