Purifiers
What are purifiers?
Purifiers are used to remove contamination from liquids such as fuel and oils, they are widely incorporated in marine engines. A purifier can separate two liquids. In the example of fuel one can imagine that water or any other contaminating liquid needs to be separated from the fuel. To maintain an efficient combustion in a marine engine good quality fuel is required. The heavy oil used in engines is not of the purest form. In order to clean this contaminated fuel it is sent through purifying equipment before it reaches the engine. Purifiers are covered by the umbrella term separators. Let’s look into the different types of separators.
How do separators work?
In short we have mentioned above what the purpose of a purifier is. Let’s have a look at how separators in general work. When using a separator to clean fuel there are two different ways of doing so.
Fuel cleaning by using gravity
The easiest way to filter and therefore clean fuel is by gravity separation. Gravity is used in this method to separate contaminating liquids and/or solids which are heavier than fuel. The impurities sink to the bottom of the tank, while fuel floats on top. Fuel flows through an opening at the top of the tank and leaves everything else behind in the tank. Water and other impurities can be removed by draining the tank
Centrifugal cleaning
Centrifuging is the process used for faster and most efficient cleaning of fuel. The operating principle of centrifugation is easy to understand. Centrifuges work by rapidly spinning a bowl which contains the liquid. The spinning movement produces the required centrifugal force to separate liquids and/or solids from one another. The centrifugal force will throw everything with a greater density than the fuel against the circumference of the bowl. In this way fuel remains in the center of the bowl and can make its way to the engine.
Two different separators
Among centrifuging separators there is one specific difference. That difference can be found in the contamination that is separated from the fuel. Purifiers separate two liquids of different densities. Separators used for separating solid impurities are known as clarifiers.
